Arizona Wildcats football practice

Former UA assistant Jahmile Addae, right, took a job as Minnesota’s defensive backs coach. He joins Rod Smith (Illinois) as ex-RichRod staffers to find a home in the Big Ten.

Another of Rich Rodriguez’s former assistant coaches is headed to the Big Ten.

Jahmile Addae, who coached the Arizona Wildcats’ safeties the past two seasons, has been hired as the defensive backs coach at Minnesota.

Addae will go head-to-head with one of his former colleagues on Nov. 3, when Minnesota visits Illinois. The Illini last month hired former UA assistant Rod Smith as their offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Addae will work under P.J. Fleck, who enters his second season as the Golden Gophers’ head coach.

Addae spent five seasons at Arizona, the first three as a staff analyst. He transitioned to a full-time on-field role in December 2016.

The UA fired Rodriguez on Jan. 2. Kevin Sumlin replaced him Jan. 14. He retained just two members of Rodriguez’s 2017 staff: defensive coordinator Marcel Yates and wide receivers coach Theron Aych.

First rendering of UA’s new indoor facility

The UA’s new $15 million indoor sports center may end up looking a little bit like Bear Down Gym, Richard Jefferson Gymnasium and some of the new construction around McKale Center. And maybe that’s the point.

Artist’s renderings of the new facility posted to BWS Architects’ website Thursday show a 65-foot-tall building that will span most of the area between Enke Drive and East Sixth Street. The air-conditioned facility will be built for football practice as well as donor functions, tailgates and possibly, according to the architects, a beer garden. The university has yet to sign off on any design plans.

The UA is expected to break ground on the indoor sports center in April, with plans to complete it by January 2019. The project is separate from the Arizona Stadium east-side renovations, which are also taking place this offseason. Those changes, which include a razed and renovated ZonaZoo, should be ready in time for the team’s 2018 season opener.
