Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Andrew McCutchen, who played in Sahlen Field as a member of the Indianapolis Indians in 2008, offered his own salute to Buffalo's return to baseball Tuesday.
McCutchen, 33, narrated a 2 1/2-minute YouTube video saluting the city's Negro League history as part of a salute to the 100th anniversary of the Negro Leagues in conjunction with the Negro League Museum in Kansas City.
"You're going to hear a lot about former players from Buffalo or even the Bisons," McCutchen said. "But this is the 100th anniversary of the Negro Leagues so I wanted to remind you of other Buffalo baseball connections."
McCutchen starts by pointing out the Indianapolis Clowns won three titles while barnstorming at Offermann Stadium during the early 1950s with a roster that featured a young Hank Aaron. The Clowns were the motivation for the 1976 movie "The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings."
McCutchen then talks about the role of female players on the Clowns during the '50s and about other Negro League teams that played in Buffalo.
McCutchen, who is approaching 1,600 career big-league games, is 4 for 30 at the plate for the Phillies so far this season. He will be at the park for a makeup doubleheader against the Blue Jays on Aug. 20.
