Former Arizona football head coach Kevin Sumlin was arrested and charged with driving under the influence in the wee hours of Saturday morning in Florida, according to a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department report, which was first reported by Taylor Lyons of The Diamondback, a student newspaper at the University of Maryland.Β
Sumlin, who was arrested around 1 a.m. on Saturday on U.S. Route 301 in Tampa, Florida, reportedly refused aΒ breathalyzer test at the scene, which could lead to a license suspension for at least one year.Β There was no property damage or crash.Β
Sumlin pleaded not guilty and waived arraignment.Β Β
The 59-year-old Sumlin is now in his first season as the co-offensive coordinator for the Maryland Terrapins, after coaching the Houston Gamblers of the USFL in 2022. His arrest came during Maryland's bye week.Β
Following his six-year tenure at Texas A&M, where he coached Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Johnny Manziel, Sumlin was fired by the Aggies in 2017 with a 51-26 record. Sumlin was hired by Arizona where he posted a 9-20 record over three years, which was stamped by a 70-7 loss to rival Arizona State to end the truncated and pandemic-influenced season in 2020. Sumlin was fired the next day.
Sumlin is not coaching at Maryland this week, said head coach Michael Locksley on Tuesday.Β
"We're aware of the charges. It's disappointing," Locksley said. "As coaches, we have to set the example and model the behavior that we want (from) our players and we take it very seriously. At the same time, I will also say he's part of our football family, and we're going to support Kevin."
