The Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners pulled off a trade on Wednesday, with Arizona sending third baseman Eugenio Suarez for first baseman Tyler Locklear and pitching prospects Juan Burgos and Hunter Cranton.
Suarez is set to become a free agent after this season. He’s batting .248 this season with 36 home runs and 87 RBIs.

Locklear was the No. 9-ranked prospect in the Mariners’ organization, according to MLB.com. Cranton was No. 16. Burgos was No. 17.

D-backs receive a C, Mariners land an A
R.J. Anderson writes: “It’s to be seen what the Diamondbacks can get from this trio. Perhaps Locklear becomes a fixture in the middle of Arizona’s lineup, and/or maybe both Cranton and Burgos can work their way into high-leverage situations. In that case, this deal will age well enough. As it stands, though, it’s probably OK to feel a touch underwhelmed by this package considering the strength of the Mariners’ system and the paucity of comparable offensive talent available.”
D-backs given a C, Mariners take an A
It writes: “Locklear is well-liked but ultimately a right-handed first baseman dependent on power. Arizona could be a good fit to get him at-bats. Burgos and Cranton should develop into big-league relievers, but it’s hard to say what kind of ceiling either have.”

Jesse Yomtov writes: “Pretty good return, plucking three of Seattle’s top 20 prospects in Locklear (No. 9), Cranton (16) and Burgos (17). Locklear, 24, will likely find himself getting a run-out in Arizona’s lineup sooner rather than later. The first baseman made his big-league debut last season and has nothing left to prove in the minors (.316/.401/.552, 19 HR, 82 RBis in Class AAA).”

Chris Landers writes: “The Diamondbacks should feel good about getting Locklear in this deal. And Cranton and Burgos should be able to contribute — Burgos out of the pen right away potentially. Still ... that’s all they could squeeze out for a bat as hot as Suarez’s? I get his defense is suspect, but still.”
