Oct. 30: Ironwood Ridge 21, Mountain View 20 (OT)
Cole McLafferty was ready to go home.
Ironwood Ridge rallied from a 14-point deficit to force overtime against host Mountain View and the senior running back had seen enough (see box score below).
So on the first snap of the extra period, McLafferty took the handoff, cut to his right and sprinted for the goal line, giving the Nighthawks their first lead of the night.
Mountain View quickly answered back with a touchdown on its first play of overtime. But the Mountain Lions were ready to go home as well — and lock up a likely postseason berth — so they attempted a two-point conversion.
Once the pass dropped incomplete, McLafferty’s wish was granted.
Fourth-ranked I-Ridge topped the No. 19 Mountain Lions 21-20 in dramatic fashion on Friday night to close out the regular season and solidify its chances of hosting first- and second-round games in the Division II state playoffs.
“I was kind of tired of being here, I wanted to go home,” said McLafferty, who rushed for 80 yards and caught the game-tying touchdown pass two minutes into the fourth quarter. “I wanted to go home with a win.”
The Nighthawks (8-2) find out their postseason fate Saturday morning when the Arizona Interscholastic Association releases playoff brackets.
Senior running back Bryce Coleman rushed for a game-high 150 yards on 34 carries and caught a touchdown pass Friday night but Mountain View will almost certainly be left out of postseason, mainly as a result of its surprising 43-40 loss to Canyon del Oro last week.
The Mountain Lions (6-4) needed to win to have a shot at earning an at-large bid for the 16-team single-elimination tournament, which begins next week. For a while, it looked like they were primed to pull off the upset and notch just their second win ever against I-Ridge.
Mountain View scored 14 points in a span of 17 seconds to take a two-touchdown lead in the second quarter.
Junior wide receiver Sebastian Spencer snagged a tipped ball and turned up the field for a 57-yard score, giving the Mountain Lions a 7-0 lead with 8:20 left in the second quarter. Then, I-Ridge’s Jared McKemy fumbled on the ensuing kick return, giving Mountain View the ball inside the 20.
Senior Justice Summerset took the snap, turned to his left and lobbed a screen pass to Coleman, who weaved trough the defense and dived into the end zone for a 16-yard score.
That score held until I-Ridge put together an 85-yard, 11-play drive capped off by a 23-yard TD run by Harrison Beemiller with 1:28 left in the third quarter. After forcing a three-and-out, the Nighthawks needed just four plays to tie the game at 14, when Beemiller connected with McLafferty for a 22-yard touchdown.
“We’ve battled adversity all year, we’ve been down at halftime, so it was nothing new to us,” Beemiller said. “It means a lot more beating Mountain View because if we lost to them, they still have bragging rights over us.”
Mountain View had multiple chances to win it from there, starting with an I-Ridge fumble recovered by Skylor Lee inside the 20.
The Mountain Lions missed a 33-yard field goal but a penalty gave them new life, with a first down at the 8. Four plays later, I-Ridge’s Deacon Laurita blocked a potential go-ahead field goal.
About 90 seconds later, Mountain View got the ball back again, at the I-Ridge 35 with 1:26 remaining. Then, with 16 seconds left in regulation, Andrew Blaisdell attempted another go-ahead field goal from 33 yards, just missing it wide left.
When it came time to decide whether to go for the tie or the win in overtime — after Summerset connected with DeShaun Flannigan-Fowles for a 10-yard score — the Mountain Lions went for the win. But the play didn’t shape up and Summerset’s pass fell incomplete, putting a likely end to a season that started out with state championship expectations.
“We wanted to go for two, that was our decision,” Coleman said. “That’s just something we’ve got to live with now because we made the decision to go for it.”

Oct. 30: Sabino 35, Marana 28
Sabino beat Marana on the road, 35-28, to secure a spot in the postseason in what was likely a de facto playoff game (see box score below).
Sabino (8-1) coach Jay Campos said he didn’t think a loss to 15th-ranked Marana would drop the No. 10-ranked Sabercats out of the Division III playoffs, but Sabino junior quarterback/receiver Drew Dixon said the Sabercats treated the regular-season finale like a playoff game.
“That’s what I was just telling the team, the playoffs started tonight, because if we lost then we don’t go to the postseason,” Dixon said.
This season will be Sabino’s 14th straight trip to the playoffs, while Marana (6-4) was seeking its first postseason appearance since 2007.
“It was an extra playoff game to us, I felt like every single person on our team felt like it was the first round of the playoffs and that’s how we came out and played it,” said Sabino safety/running back Taylor Killian.
The game was back and forth, with ties at 7-7, 21-21 and 28-28. Marana had a chance to tie it late until Killian got an interception in the final two minutes deep in Sabino territory.
“It felt great, a really exhilarating moment,” Killian said. “We played four quarters of football and I think this is a team win. It’s not one play that determined it.”
Dixon was 16 for 30 for 185 yards and ran for 39 yards on 12 carries. He passed for two touchdowns, ran for one and had a receiving touchdown while throwing two interceptions.
For Marana, quarterback Connor Leavens was 11 for 28 for 220 yards and a touchdown and interception. The junior signal caller had been sidelined since an Oct. 2 loss to Nogales.
The loss snapped a three-game win streak for Tigers, who had won five of their last six.
“In the end we found a way to dig deep and get it done against a good Marana team and they were fighting for a playoff spot and they’re a good team, so I’m just really proud of our guys,” Campos said.
Sabino rebounded from its only loss, a 3-0 result against Catalina Foothills in the rain two weeks ago.
After a bye last week, Dixon said the week extended the “bad taste” in their mouths.
“It was a miserable two weeks waiting to get back on the field,” Campos said.
Campos said the win was big because it gives Sabino a chance to host a playoff game when the brackets are announced on Saturday.
“At least we put ourselves in contention to potentially get one of those,” Campos said.

Oct. 30: Tucson High 27, Sunnyside 20 (OT)
At Sunnyside, Tucson overcame a 12-point halftime deficit and a feisty Blue Devils homecoming crowd to beat the Blue Devils 27-20 in overtime on Friday night.
The win gives the Badgers the section championship and an automatic spot in the state tournament.
Tucson (7-3) entered the game at No. 15 in Division II. Sunnyside (6-4) came in No. 10 and will find out Saturday if it made the state tournament.
“At halftime we didn’t make a single adjustment,” said Tucson coach Justin Argraves. “We told the kids you just have to do your job, remember everything you’ve worked on and clean it up.
“And they responded.”
It was star senior captain DeAndre Williams who shone brightest for the Badgers when his team needed it the most — making numerous big plays late in the game for Tucson.
Williams caught a screen pass from Jorge Flores and exploded for a 75-yard touchdown to give Tucson its first lead of the game, 17-12, with 7:49 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Before that play the Badgers really couldn’t get anything going. Sunnyside’s defense was fired up and feeding off of the energy of the fans at a packed Sunnyside stadium for homecoming.
“We came out a little too tight, a little tense, but it’s a big game and we just had to settle down,” Argraves said.
The Blue Devils forced Tucson into four punts and two turnover-on-downs before Tucson was able to finally add a field goal early in the third quarter.
Sunnyside reclaimed the lead when quarterback Nick O'Hagin found Gabriel Soto for a 21-yard touchdown pass, putting the Blue Devils ahead 20-17 with 4:49 left.
After a Chris Holguin 32-yard field goal tied the game at 20, Sunnyside had one last opportunity to win it on a third-down play from Tucson’s 31–yard-line with three seconds remaining in regulation.
O'Hagin dropped back and launched a Hail Mary in the corner of the end zone, but the pass was intercepted by Williams to send the game into overtime.
In overtime, Tucson used three plays to go 10 yards and scored on a 4-yard run by Jeff Lockwood to put the visitors up 27-20.
Sunnyside had one final opportunity to tie or win.
The game came down to a third-and-goal when O'Hagin scrambled away from pressure and threw a pass that was intercepted by Williams to seal the game.
After the game's final play, Tucson fans rushed onto the field and celebrated with the team in a moment that can only be described as pure jubilation. The Badgers are going to the playoffs and will wait to see who they will face Saturday morning at a viewing breakfast at the school.
“We knew tonight was a win-or-go-home situation and playing such a well-coached team like Sunnyside to be able to pull of the win and do it in dramatic fashion like we did is special.”

Cienega 34, Salpointe Catholic 31 (OT)
At Salpointe, Cienega's Terrell Hayward intercepted a pass in overtime to clinch the 34-31 win for the Bobcats and possibly keep the Lancers from going to the playoffs.
“I just feel bad for our kids, I feel horrible for our seniors, a great group of kids. They’ve been really enjoyable to be around for four years and I’m going to miss them very much,” said Salpointe Catholic coach Dennis Bene.
During the first quarter, Aaron Sauls of the Bobcasts was the first to score a touchdown on a 1-yard run to make it 7-0 Cienega.
Salpointe tied the game at 7 early in the second quarter on Dominic Salaz's 1-yard run. Salpointe then scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 6-yard run by Salaz.
Cienega’s Jacob Hackett kicked a field goal before halftime to cut Salpointe's lead to 14-10.
Salpointe's Cameron Scharf kicked a 25-yard field goal in the third quarter to put the Lancers up 17-10, but Cienega tied the game at 17 on Bryant Savaughn's 1-yard touchdown run.
Sean Barton passed the ball 75 yards to Joe Noonan to put the Lancers up 24-17, and then Salaz scored his third touchdown of the night, going in from 10 yards out to put Salpointe up 31-17.
Salaz ran for 144 yards in the game.
The fourth quarter and overtime was all Cienega. Savaughn scored on a 1-yard run, and when the kick failed the Bobcats trailed 31-23. But Cienega tied it with 2:10 left in the fourth when Tyler Hammons threw a 19-yard pass to Breaben Bolton. The Bobcats then converted a 2-point conversion.
Cienega (4-6) kicked a field goal on its possession in overtime. The Bobcats started 1-6 this year, but finished with three straight wins.
“Oh we’ve had a rough year, it was a tough year our kids have played hard all year long, we never quit to go out and beat a team like that at the end of the year ... we’re not going to playoffs but what a great way to send these seniors off,” said Cienega coach Pat Nugent.

Daniel Gaona
