Virgil Stan, the first football coach in Sahuaro High School history, died Saturday in Tucson at age 94.
Stan, a four-year quarterback at Western State College in Colorado, coached at Tucson High in the 1960s and joined Hall of Fame basketball coach Dick McConnell on the initial coaching staff at Sahuaro in 1968.
Stan coached through 1983, producing future NFL players such as quarterback Rodney Peete and receiver John Mistler. He went 67-68-7 in his career at Sahuaro.
He was Tucson's 1972 prep football Coach of the Year. In 2007, he was inducted into the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame.
