'I proudly carry his name': Rebekah Quiroz to follow father Armando as Pima's softball coach

Pima College is promoting longtime associate head coach Rebekah Quiroz in the wake of her father's recent retirement. 

Rebekah Quiroz will take over the Aztecs' softball program immediately. She has served as an assistant coach at Pima since 2005; in 2013, she received the title of associate head coach. 

She said in a statement that she is "most humbled and honored to accept" the job. 

"I will do my absolute best to ensure continuity of this nationally recognized and respected program that my father (and prior coaches) have created,” she said. “Thank you for the opportunity to serve Pima College and the Tucson community that I love.

“I am everything I am because of my father; I am honored, and proudly carry his name through this next journey of my coaching career.”

The younger Quiroz was a star softball player at Flowing Wells High School who played the 2002 season at Pima College, earning first-team all-conference, all-region and All-American honors. She hit .500, the highest mark among regulars in the country. Quiroz transferred to the UA, where she spent two seasons on coach Mike Candrea's roster. She played for National Pro Fastpitch's Arizona Heat from 2005-08. Rebekah Quiroz has an associate's degree from Pima, and earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from the UA and is completing a master's program at NAU. 

Armando Quiroz won 501 games over 11 seasons at Pima. He was inducted into the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Flowing Wells High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.
