Beijing Winter Olympics first to rely on artificial snow

The opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics takes place on Friday, making the Chinese capital the first city to host a Winter and Summer Games. They will take place against a backdrop of diplomatic boycotts, human rights concerns and questions about the environmental impact of an event that will rely almost entirely on artificial snow.
