Across more than 40 years, Doug McCoy was one of Tucson's leading high school swimming coaches, helping Sahuaro to a 1982 state championship and more recently, coaching Catalina Foothills to second place in the 2024 girls state championships. Sadly, McCoy passed away last week at 73.
A graduate of the University of Arizona's Eller College of Management, McCoy was probably more well known as the father of ex-Sahuaro High pitcher Pat McCoy, who went on to pitch for the Detroit Tigers. But it was much more than that. His daughter, Katherine, was an all-state swimmer in 2002 who went to Tulane and in 2015 was inducted into Tulane's Sports Hall of Fame. Another of Doug's sons, Matt, was a standout catcher at Sahuaro.
McCoy spent many years coaching the Tucson Ford Dealers swimming club, as well as being a part of the coaching staffs at Rincon, Sahuaro and Catalina Foothills. He was also general manager of the Lakeside Sportsclub near Santa Rita High School.
A funeral mass for McCoy will be held April 24 at 10 a.m., at St. Francis de Sales, 1375 S. Camino Seco.
