With the academic year coming to a close in the next few weeks, it’s time for Southern Arizona student-athletes to test their skills at the highest level at the AIA Spring State Championships. 

Conference play-in games and first-round matches began last week. Here's how local high schools are doing in the tournament (so far).

Baseball

All games are listed in division order, conferences 6A-2A.

6A-4A first-round matchups took place on Saturday, May 3; 3A games begin at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6; 2A matchups start at 4 p.m. on May 9.

No. 16 Sunnyside vs. No. 1 Corona del Sol at Corona del Sol High School

  • Corona Del Sol defeated Sunnyside, 2-1. Sunnyside will play again on May 6 for another chance to make it to the final round.
    • Sunnyside was defeated by Queen Creek, 4-3, on May 6.

No. 12 Chaparral vs. No. 5 Cienega at Cienega High School

  • Cienega took down Chaparral, 7-6. The Bobcats move to the second round to take on Catalina Foothills on May 5.
    • Cienega was defeated, 13-0, by Catalina Foothills on May 5. The Bobcats compete for a second chance in the tournament on May 8.
      • The Bobcats took down Verrado, 6-0, on May 8. They play Catalina Foothills on May 12.

No. 13 Lake Havasu vs. No. 4 Catalina Foothills at Catalina Foothills High School

  • Catalina Foothills run-ruled Lake Havasu, 14-4. They'll take on Cienega at home on May 5.
    • Catalina Foothills run-ruled Cienega, 13-0, on May 5. They advance to take on Canyon View on May 8.
      • Canyon View defeated Catalina Foothills, 2-1, on May 8. Catalina Foothills has another chance in the tournament when they take on Cienega on May 12.

No. 15 Campo Verde vs. No. 2 Canyon del Oro at Canyon del Oro High School

  • Canyon Del Oro defeated Campo Verde, 7-3. They'll face Notre Dame Prep in the second round at home on May 5.
    • Canyon Del Oro took down Notre Dame Prep, 13-4. They'll face Centennial on May 8.
      • Canyon Del Oro defeated Centennial, 6-4, on May 8. They advance to the semifinals on May 14.

No. 10 Notre Dame Prep vs. No. 7 Buena at Buena High School

  • Sierra Vista's Buena couldn't hold it down against Notre Dame Prep, losing 5-1 in the first round.

No. 11 Desert View vs. No. 6 Nogales at War Memorial Baseball Stadium (Nogales)

  • In the battle of two Southern Arizona schools, Nogales came out on top after defeating Desert View, 2-1. The Apaches will take on Centennial in the second round on May 5.
    • Nogales lost to Centennial, 2-0, on May 5. They'll get a second chance in the tournament when they take on Notre Dame Prep on May 8.
      • Nogales beat Notre Dame Prep, 3-2, on May 8. They'll face Centennial on May 12.

No. 16 St. Mary’s vs. No. 1 Salpointe Catholic at Salpointe High School

  • Salpointe Catholic defeated St. Mary's, 8-7. They'll take on Bradshaw Mountain in the second round at home on May 5.
    • The Lancers run ruled Bradshaw Mountain, 10-0, on May 5. They advance to face Mesquite on May 7.
      • Salpointe Catholic defeated Mesquite, 9-1, in the quarterfinals. They advance to the semifinals and will face Ironwood Ridge on May 14.

No. 12 Yuma vs. No. 5 Ironwood Ridge at Ironwood Ridge High School

  • Ironwood Ridge will face Mesquite on May 5 after defeating Yuma, 3-2.
    • Ironwood Ridge was defeated by Mesquite in a close 8-7 match. They'll get a second chance in the tournament when they take on Bradshaw Mountain on May 7.
      • Ironwood Ridge will take on Mesquite on May 10 for another chance in the tournament.
        • Ironwood Ridge defeated Mesquite, 8-0, and will face Salpointe Catholic in the semifinals on May 14.

No. 15 Mica Mountain vs. No. 2 ALA - Queen Creek at ALA - Queen Creek

  • Mica Mountain was defeated by ALA - Queen Creek, 5-4.

No. 11 Deer Valley vs. No. 6 Sahuarita at Sahuarita High School

  • Sahuarita went down 4-2 against Deer Valley.

No. 14 Pusch Ridge vs. No. 3 Northwest Christian at Northwest Christian High School

  • Pusch Ridge defeated Northwest Christian, 2-0. They'll take on Snowflake in the quarterfinals on May 10.
    • Pusch Ridge took down Snowflake, 7-3. The team advances to the semifinals to take on Yuma Catholic.

No. 15 Empire vs. No. 2 Yuma Catholic at Yuma Catholic

  • Empire was taken down by Yuma Catholic, 10-3.

No. 16 Wickenburg vs. No. 1 Bisbee at Goodyear Baseball Complex - South

  • Bisbee defeated Wickenburg, 5-2, in the first round.
    • Bisbee was then taken down by Benson, 6-4, in the quarterfinals.

No. 9 Phoenix Country Day vs. No. 8 Benson at Goodyear Baseball Complex - South

  • Benson took down Phoenix Country Day, 17-2, in the first round of the tournament.
    • Benson defeated Bisbee, 6-4, in the quarterfinals on May 10. They'll face Tombstone in the semifinals on May 16.

No. 13 St. John’s vs. No. 4 Tombstone at Goodyear Baseball Complex - South

  • Tombstone defeated St. John's, 6-0, in the first round on May 9. 
    • Tombstone took down Glendale Prep, 2-1, in the quarterfinals the following day. They'll face Benson in the semifinals on May 16.

Softball

All games are listed in conference order, 6A-2A. The first-round games began on Saturday, May 3.

No. 12 Mountain View, Mesa vs. No. 5 Tucson at Cherry Field

  • Tucson took down Mountain View, Mesa, 4-1. The Badgers will take on Xavier Prep on May 7.
    • Tucson was defeated by Xavier Prep, 3-1, on May 7. They'll take on Basha on May 8 for another chance in the tournament.
      • Tucson defeated Basha, 10-9, on May 8.
        • Tucson then took on Mountain View, Mesa, and won, 3-1, to advance to the L Round Quarterfinal A against Queen Creek on May 13.

No. 10 Sandra Day O’Connor vs. No. 7 Sunnyside at Sunnyside High School

  • Sunnyside couldn't hold up against Sandra Day O'Connor, falling 8-3. The Blue Devils will take on Corona Del Sol in a redemption match on May 6.
    • Sunnyside defeated Corona Del Sol, 10-7, to advance to the next round. They'll face Hamilton on May 8.
      • Sunnyside fell to Hamilton, 11-5, on May 8.

No. 10 Cienega vs. No. 7 Mountain View (Marana) at Mountain View (Marana) High School

  • Cienega came out on top over Mountain View (Marana) with 5-4 win. They'll face Canyon View in the second round on May 6.
    • Cienega lost to Canyon View, 3-1, but they will get another shot when they take on AZ College Prep on May 8.
      • Cienega took down AZ College Prep, 4-3, on May 8. They'' face Canyon View on May 14.

No. 14 Buckeye Union vs. No. 3 Canyon del Oro at CDO High School

  • Canyon Del Oro defeated Buckeye Union, 10-0. CDO will take on AZ College Prep in the second round at home on May 6.
    • Canyon Del Oro took down AZ College Prep and will face Canyon View in the third round on May 10.
      • CDO defeated Canyon View, 2-0, to advance to the semifinals on May 16.

No. 12 Mohave vs. No. 5 Sahuarita at Sahuarita High School

  • Sahuarita moves on to the second round of the tournament after taking down Mohave, 11-1, in a run rule win. They'll face Mica Mountain on May 6.
    • Sahuarita took down Mica Mountain, 6-0, in the second round. They advance to round three on May 10.
      • Sahuarita fell to Coconino, 3-2, in round three, but will get another chance in the tournament when they face Mica Mountain again on May 13.

No. 13 Crismon vs. No. 4 Mica Mountain at Mica Mountain High School

  • Mica Mountain defeated Crismon, 9-5, and will face Sahuarita in the second round on May 6.
    • Mica Mountain lost to Sahuarita in the second round, but they will get another chance in the tournament when they play on May 8.
      • Mica Mountain defeated Eastmark, 3-2, in extras. They'll take on Sahuarita again in the L Round 3A on May 13.

No. 15 Douglas vs. No. 2 Salpointe Catholic at Salpointe High School

  • Salpointe Catholic walked away with a 4-0 win after taking down Douglas in the first round. They advance to take on Walden Grove on May 6.
    • Salpointe Catholic defeated Walden Grove, 8-1, to advance to the third round on May 10.
      • Salpointe Catholic run ruled Poston Butte, 10-0, to advance to the semifinal on May 15.

No. 10 Walden Grove vs. No. 7 Ironwood Ridge at Ironwood Ridge High School

  • Walden Grove defeated Ironwood Ridge, 5-3. They'll face Salpointe Catholic in the next round on May 6.
    • Walden Grove was taken down by Salpointe Catholic, 8-1, on May 6.

No. 16 Safford vs. No. 1 Empire at Empire High School

  • The Ravens defeated Safford, 11-0, in five innings. They face Sabino on May 7.
    • Empire defeated Safford, 6-0, on May 7. They'll take on Tanque Verde in the semifinals on May 9.
      • Empire took down Tanque Verde, 1-0, in nine innings on May 9. The Ravens advance to the final against Yuma Catholic on May 12.

No. 12 River Valley vs. No. 5 Tanque Verde at Tanque Verde High School

  • Tanque Verde defeated River Valley, 8-3, in the first round of the tournament. They'll face ALA - West Foothills in the quarterfinals on May 7.
    • Tanque Verde took down ALA - West Foothills in the quarterfinals. The Hawks advance to the semifinals to take on Empire.
      • Tanque Verde fell to Empire, 1-0, on May 9.

No. 9 Santa Cruz Valley vs. No. 8 Tombstone at Tombstone High School

  • Tombstone punched its ticket to the quarterfinals after run ruling Santa Cruz Valley with a 16-0 win. They'll take on Mohave Accelerated on May 6.
    • Tombstone was defeated by Mohave Accelerated, 5-0, on May 6.

No. 12 Bisbee vs. No. 5 Round Valley at Round Valley High School

  • Bisbee was knocked out of the first round of the tournament after losing 13-5 to Round Valley.

No. 13 Benson vs. No. 4 Kingman Academy at Kingman Academy

  • Benson was also knocked out of the first round of the tournament after falling to Kingman Academy, 11-5.

No. 10 Camp Verde vs. No. 7 Willcox at Willcox High School

  • Willcox is heading to the quarterfinals on May 6 after defeating Camp Verde, 5-4. They'll take on Horizon Honors.
    • Willcox was defeated, 12-2, by Horizon Honors in the quarterfinals.

Boys tennis

All team events are listed in division order, Div. I-III. The first-round matches began on Wednesday, April 30. (May 6 update: Match results are now listed below for team, singles and doubles.)

No. 6 Rincon/University vs. Mountain View, Mesa at Rincon/University High School

  • Rincon/University defeated Mountain View, Mesa, 5-2, to advance to the quarterfinals on May 7. They will take on Perry High School.
    • In the singles event on May 5, Vikram Nerendran took home the state championship title after a 6-4, 6-4 win.
    • Rincon/University (team) fell to Perry, 5-1, in the quarterfinals on May 7.

No. 16 Nogales vs. No. 1 Catalina Foothills at Catalina Foothills High School

  • Catalina Foothills took down Nogales, 5-0, to advance to the quarterfinals on May 7. Catalina Foothills will play Shadow Mountain.
    • Senior Austin Cohen took home the state title with a 6-1, 6-2 win the final round of singles.
      • Duo Santiago Astengo and Parker Servoss won the doubles state championship with a 6-2, 6-1 win.
        • On the road to the state championship title, Catalina Foothills took down Shadow Mountain (6-0), ALA - Gilbert North (5-0) and Notre Dame Prep (5-0) to earn the team state title.

No. 5 Ironwood Ridge vs. No. 12 Eastmark at Ironwood Ridge High School

  • Ironwood Ridge almost took down Eastmark, but the Firebirds took home the win, 5-4.

No. 15 Buena vs. No. 2 Notre Dame Prep at Scottsdale Ranch Park

  • Buena couldn't hold up against Notre Dame Prep and fell, 5-0.

No. 16 Tanque Verde vs. Phoenix Country Day at Phoenix Tennis Center

  • Tanque Verde was defeated by Phoenix Country Day, 5-0.

No. 12 Willcox vs. No. 5 The Gregory School at Reffkin Tennis Center (Randolph Park)

  • The Gregory School walked away with a W after taking down Willcox, 8-1. They advance to take on ALA - West Foothills in the quarterfinals on May 7.
    • The Gregory School fell to ALA - West Foothills, 5-3, in the quarterfinals.

No. 14 Safford vs. No. 3 Pusch Ridge at Hilton El Conquistador Tucson

  • Pusch Ridge took home the win after defeating Safford, 5-0. The Lions will advance in the quarterfinals to take on Florence on May 7.
    • Pusch Ridge defeated Florence, 5-1, in the quarterfinals. 
      • Pusch Ridge edged Thatcher, 5-4, in the semifinal on May 9. They advanced to face Phoenix Country Day in the final.
        • Pusch Ridge fell in the final, 5-3, to Phoenix Country Day.

No. 10 Sabino vs. No. 7 Glendale Prep at Paseo Racquet Center

  • Sabino took down Glendale Prep, 5-4, and will advance in the quarterfinals. They will take on Thatcher on May 7.
    • Sabino duo David Gonzalez and Adam Olson won the Div. III doubles state title after a 6-4, 7-6(5) win.
      • Sabino (team) fell to Thatcher, 5-1, in the quarterfinals.

Girls tennis

All team events are listed in division order, Div. I-III. The first-round matches began on Monday, April 29. (April 30 update: Match results are now below.)

No. 11 Rincon/University vs. No. 6 Hamilton at Hamilton High School 

  • Hamilton defeated Rincon/University, 5-1, Hamilton advances.

No. 16 Buena vs. No. 1 Salpointe Catholic at Reffkin Tennis Center (Randolph Park)

  • Salpointe Catholic defeated Buena, 5-0. Salpointe Catholic advances to take on Catalina Foothills in the quarterfinals on May 6.
    • Salpointe Catholic player Lacey Kaufman took home the singles state title with a 6-7(3), 6-1, 10-6 win.
      • Salpointe Catholic defeated Catalina Foothills, 6-2, to advance to the semifinals on May 9. They'll face Saguaro.
        • Salpointe Catholic defeated Saguaro, 5-0, in the semis. They advance to face CDO.
          • Salpointe Catholic defeated CDO, 5-2, in the state final on May 10.

No. 9 Catalina Foothills vs. No. 8 Arcadia at Arcadia High School

  • Catalina Foothills took down Arcadia, 5-0, and will face Salpointe Catholic in the quarterfinals on May 6.
    • Catalina Foothills was defeated by Salpointe Catholic, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.

No. 14 Ironwood Ridge vs. No. 3 Canyon Del Oro at Canyon Del Oro High School

  • Canyon Del Oro defeated Ironwood Ridge, 5-0. Canyon Del Oro advances.
    • Canyon Del Oro defeated Flagstaff, 6-0, in the quarterfinals. CDO advances to the semifinals to face Notre Dame Prep on May 9.
      • CDO took down Notre Dame Prep, 5-2, in the semis.
        • The Dorados fell to Salpointe Catholic in the final state match, 5-2, on May 10.

No. 10 ALA - Gilbert North vs. No. 7 Nogales at Nogales High School

  • Nogales took down ALA - Gilbert North, 5-3, and will face Notre Dame Prep in the quarterfinals on May 6.
    • Nogales was defeated by Notre Dame Prep, 5-1, in the quarterfinals.

No. 15 Walden Grove vs. No. 2 Notre Dame Prep at Scottsdale Ranch Park

No. 12 St. John Paul II vs. No. 5 Pusch Ridge at Hilton El Conquistador Tucson

  • Pusch Ridge took down St. John Paul II, 5-2. The team advances to take on Phoenix Country Day in the quarterfinals on May 6.
    • Pusch Ridge duo Estelle Fetsis and Taryn Martin won the doubles state title with a 4-6, 6-3, 10-0 win.
      • Pusch Ridge defeated Phoenix Country Day, 5-1, in the quarterfinals. They'll face Cicero Prep in the semifinals on May 9.
        • Pusch Ridge took down Cicero Prep, 5-2, in the semis on May 9.
          • The Lions took home the state title after defeating Yuma Catholic, 5-2.

No. 14 Tanque Verde and No. 3 Northland Prep at Hal Jensen Recreation Center

  • Tanque Verde lost to Northland Prep, 6-0.

Boys volleyball

6A-4A boys volleyball play-in matches begin at 6 p.m. on May 6. The 3A tournament (no play-in) begins on May 9.

  • Mountain View, Mesa took down Marana in the first play-in match, 3-0.

  • Rincon/University was taken down by Millennium in the play-in match, 3-1.

No. 17 Buena vs. No. 16 Buckeye Union at Buckeye Union High School

  • Buena was defeated by Buckeye Union, 3-0, in the play-in match.

No. 18 Flowing Wells vs. No. 15 Maricopa at Maricopa High School

No. 22 Canyon Del Oro vs. Sunrise Mountain at Sunrise Mountain High School

  • Canyon Del Oro was defeated by Sunrise Mountain, 3-0, in the play-in round.

No. 14 Mountain View (Marana) vs. No. 19 Alhambra at Mountain View (Marana) High School

  • Mountain View (Marana) took down Alhambra, 3-0, in the play-in round.
    • Mountain View Marana will face Catalina Foothills in round one on May 9.

No. 24 Sahuaro vs. No. 9 Thunderbird at Thunderbird High School

  • Sahuaro lost to Thunderbird, 3-0, in a play-in match.

No. 18 Peoria vs. No. 15 Ironwood Ridge at Ironwood Ridge High School

  • Ironwood Ridge defeated Peoria, 3-0, during the play-in round.
    • Ironwood Ridge will take on ALA - Gilbert North in the first round on May 9.
      • Ironwood Ridge fell to ALA - Gilbert North, 3-0, on May 9.

No. 21 St. Mary's vs. No. 12 Mica Mountain at Mica Mountain High School

  • Mica Mountain took down St. Mary's, 3-0, in the play-in round.
    • Mica Mountain will face Prescott in the first round on May 9.
      • Mica Mountain was defeated by Prescott, 3-0, on May 9.

No. 13 Mountain View (Marana) vs. No. 4 Catalina Foothills at Catalina Foothills High School

  • Catalina Foothills took down Mountain View (Marana), 3-1, in the first round of the tournament on May 9.

No. 14 Maricopa vs. No. 3 Cienega at Cienega High School

  • Cienega took home the W, 3-0, in the first round of the tournament. They will play Willow Canyon in the quarterfinals on May 13.

No. 9 Thunderbird vs. No. 8 Salpointe Catholic at Salpointe Catholic High School

  • Salpointe Catholic defeated Thunderbird, 3-1, in round one. They advance to the quarterfinals to take on Deer Valley on May 13.

No. 16 Sabino vs. No. 1 ALA - West Foothills at ALA - West Foothills

  • Sabino was defeated by ALA - West Foothills, 3-0, in the first round on May 9.

No. 10 Pusch Ridge vs. No. 7 Parker at Parker High School

  • Pusch Ridge was taken down by Parker, 3-2, in the first round.

No. 15 Palo Verde Magnet vs. No. 2 Northwest Christian at Northwest Christian High School

  • Palo Verde Magnet was defeated by Northwest Christian, 3-0, in the first round.
