Receiver Trey Griffey has shown glimpses of potential stardom during his Arizona career and could be posed for a breakout senior season.

His dad was known for the long ball.

On Saturday afternoon, The Kid’s kid took his turn going the distance.

At the end of the third quarter, Trey Griffey caught a ball from quarterback Brandon Dawkins — thrown from the end zone — at Arizona’s own 15-yard line, and the redshirt junior wideout proceeded to cut right to the middle of the field, cut back to the left and take it all the way to the end zone, avoiding as many as five or six ASU defenders along the way.

It was a 95-yard touchdown, the second longest catch in UA history and third-longest play overall.

“I mean, I just tried to make a play honestly,” said Griffey, who finished with 138 receiving yards on two catches. “The receivers got down the field. (Receivers) Coach (Tony) Dews keys on ‘once a receiver makes a catch, everybody find the ball.’ That’s what helped me out the most as far as that.”

Griffey also had a 43-yard catch in the fourth quarter.

Fittingly, it was also Griffey’s dad’s 46th birthday. His dad, of course, is MLB legend and future Hall-of-Famer Ken Griffey Jr, well-known for his home run-hitting ways.

Griffey hit 630 home runs in 22 years, and is expected to be inducted into the baseball Hall-of-Fame later this year.
