Here it comes again! Mother's Day. Let's not screw it up by giving her a humidifier or a miter box (these are real examples). What does she want? Read on β we went straight to the source, polling several moms about what they'd REALLY like for their special day.
Here, then, are our top five picks!
If she has a green thumb
Head to a favorite local nursery for some pretty posies, or, better yet, drought-tolerant succulents and drought-resistant cactus. You can find a great selection at Desert Survivors, Green Things, Harlow Gardens, Silverbell NurseryΒ and Magic Garden Nursery. Plant prices are all over the place, so you don't need to bust your budget β but you can if you want to.
If she doesn't have a green thumb
Pick up some cool yard art. One of our favorite places to shop is the corner of North Houghton and East Speedway, where a peddler sells metal javelina, cactus, roosters and so forth. You can the find the seller gently haggling with customers or spray-painting a metal flower. It'll put you out about $20 for a 3-foot flower and hummingbird. You can find lots of other outdoor art options elsewhere, too. Try Tohono Chul Park, 7366 N. Paseo del Norte, or the Tucson Botanical Garden, 2150 N. Alvernon Way.

The way to a mom's heart
"Cooking on Mother's Day" isn't on many moms' list of fun things to do. You can treat her to a nice brunch out, but we suggest you avoid the crowd and prepare or purchase a scrumptious meal to eat at home. Take a trip downtown and check out one or more of these unique food stores, which offer plenty of inspiration and are within a few miles of each other: Time Market, 444 E. University Blvd.; Johnny Gibson's Downtown Market, 11 S. 6th Ave.; and the Food Conspiracy Co-op, 412 N. 4th Ave.
Give her an art experience
Moms don't want random knick-knacks. They want to do fun things with their kids. Take her to the Tucson Museum of Art, 140 N. Main Ave., open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Arizona and Sonora residents get in free on Mother's Day, and there will be family-oriented activities, including craft-making. For details go to tucsonmuseumofart.org. Or head to DeGrazia Gallery in the Sun, 6300 N. Swan Road. Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the peaceful, 10-acre National Historic District also is home to the Little Gallery and a gift shop. Admission is $8 adults,Β $5 agesΒ 12-18, free for 12 and younger.
It's your turn, Ma!
You'll melt Mom's heart with the gift of massage. You can't get much more alone time than that, right? Lots of Tucson massage therapists get their start at the Cortiva Institute, which offers inexpensive massages from students in training. At 6390 E. Broadway Blvd., east of Kneaders, the institute has an inviting atmosphere, and services cost a bit less than many other massage practices. Call 520-407-5160 to schedule a massage or inquire about a gift certificate.
