In the ever-expanding world of self-publishing, a group of passionate writers in Tucson has come together to form a new community dedicated to supporting indie authors: the Tucson Author Alliance

This collective aims to create a space for writers of all genres to share experiences, offer tips and provide workshops to help one another succeed in the competitive world of publishing.

Formed only a few months ago, the Tucson Author Alliance is already buzzing with excitement. The group meets regularly, offering a welcoming atmosphere where authors — whether seasoned veterans or newcomers — can socialize, exchange ideas and offer guidance on everything from marketing strategies to navigating the self-publishing process.

“We wanted to create a community where indie authors can not only collaborate but also feel like they belong,” said group co-founder and local writer, A. Skoda. “Self-publishing can sometimes feel isolating and having a group like this to lean on, to share knowledge and even just to vent to, is incredibly important. It’s about fostering both professional and personal connections.”

Topics for future workshops will include tips for building an online presence, understanding copyright laws and how to design a book cover that will catch readers’ eyes. Each workshop is designed to equip authors with the tools they need to succeed and thrive in the industry, Skoda added.

“We all have different strengths,” Skoda said. “Some of us are great with writing, others are tech-savvy with book formatting and some excel at marketing and social media. It’s that diversity of skill sets that really benefits everyone. If someone is struggling in one area, someone else in the group likely has the knowledge to help.”

Skoda and her partners noticed a need for the Tucson Author Alliance due to a lack of groups aimed at supporting authors as well as offering productive advice, Skoda added. Unlike traditional writing groups, where authors may be working toward securing an agent or publishing through major houses, the alliance embraces the indie approach to storytelling and publishing. This open-minded approach creates an inclusive space where all genres and types of books are celebrated.

“We’re excited to be a part of something so dynamic and supportive,” Skoda said. “It’s so refreshing to meet people who understand the indie journey, the challenges and the triumphs. We’re all in this together.”

To join the Tucson Author Alliance, members pay a $25 annual fee which gets them access to group activities, workshops, promotion on social media and their website as well as tips of the trade and feedback from other group members, Skoda added.

Looking ahead, the Tucson Author Alliance is eager to expand its reach and engage with the wider Tucson community. Plans are already in the works to host public events, book signings, book clubs and readings that showcase the work of local authors. As part of their mission to promote indie authors, they will be participating in the Tucson Festival of Books with a tent promoting the group and local authors.

“We want people to know that Tucson has a thriving community of indie authors and we’re ready to make our voices heard,” Skoda said. “There’s so much talent here, and by coming together as a group, we can support each other in making the world of self-publishing a little less overwhelming.”

The Tucson Author Alliance is currently looking to welcome new members into the fold. Whether you're a published author or just starting to write your first manuscript, the group is open to anyone interested in connecting with fellow writers.
