Willcox's now long-delayed elimination game at the Little League Softball World Series was postponed yet again Thursday morning — the impact of Tropical Storm Debby cancelling all of the day's action in Greenville, North Carolina.
Willcox's 12U team, the "West" region representative, is 1-1 so far at the 12-team final series which will is expected to crown the 2024 Little League softball world champion this month. Willcox was originally slated to play late Tuesday, but weather pushed that to Wednesday, and then Thursday, and now to an undetermined future date and time.
On its X (Twitter) account, Little League posted Thursday morning that "no games will be played today" with the "Series in an extended weather delay" as Tropical Storm Debby continues to impact the Coastal Carolina region.
Little League has yet to update its schedule.
At its shortest distance, Greenville is about 70 miles from North Carolina’s Atlantic coast. The Star will continue to provide updates at Tucson.com/Wildcats as a new schedule is solidified or other news becomes available.
On the field, Willcox is 1-1 at the LLSWS, winning 3-1 Sunday before falling 3-0 Monday. Pitcher Hattie Macumber struck out a LLSWS record 15 in that series-opening win.
Willcox has managed that 1-1 mark despite a tough go of it so far offensively. Willcox has just six hits total through the two games, by six different players: Julie Larson, Josey Benavides and Genesis Quezada on Monday, after Jayleen Aguirre, Macumber and Navaeh Reyes hit their way on base in Sunday’s win.
Negros Occidental Little League, Willcox’s would-be next opponent from Bacolod City, Philippines, is 0-1 after falling 10-0 in a run-rule no-hitter to “North Carolina” region representative Pitt County Girls Softball Little League of Winterville, North Carolina.
