- What:
- Ben’s Bells promote kindness and community involvement. Each week a person who makes Tucson better is “belled.”
- Last week’s recipient:
- Nancy Porterfield.
- Nominated by:
- Jill Ferguson.
- Why:
- For her volunteer work in starting a women’s bridge benefit, whose proceeds go to the Arizona Cancer Center. She organizes two bridge events a year and has generated about $36,000 for cancer research. This has become a very popular event, with more than 80 women participating in the tournament last fall, Ferguson wrote in her nomination letter. She also volunteers with a group called Median Green that replants the landscaping in medians in Green Valley to keep them looking nice. She has chaired the group’s fashion show for six years, which raises money to buy the plantings, Ferguson wrote. “She takes no credit, recognition, or reward for her work. She does everything for the good of others and the community,” Ferguson wrote about Porterfield.
