The mellowed burnt adobe house set among spreading trees forms a perfect background for Western writer Walt Coburn and his lovely wife. The driveway circles a rail fence-enclosed front yard. It is here that the author's horse Baldy spends the day contentedly grazing and browsing under the trees. The sorrel has his private stable in the rear of the house.

Among the many pieces of hand-carved furnishings by Garrett Anderson at the Coburn's is this handsome replica of a Spanish chest. The wooden statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico, serves as a striking accent to the intricately-carved black walnut chest.

Sliding glass doors separate the sun porch from the living-sining room. Tucsonian Leionne Salter painted the yuccas on the crystal clear glass to keep anyone from accidentally walking through it. The dining table was hand carved from walnut by a friend of the Coburn's, Garrett E. Anderson.

The sun porch, a later addition to the house, contains one of the old time schoolmaster's desks. In addition to the desert paintings by the late Harry Shriner, there are some etchings done by Arizonan Jack Van Ryder. The handsome oak chairs with leather backs and seats have belonged to the Coburn's for 30 years. Through the open door is a glimpse of Mr. Coburn's workroom where hi spends his mornings writing.

A quilted bedspread and crisp eyelet-edged curtains carry out the Early American theme in Mrs. Coburn's bedroom. The wood of the four poster bed glows with the high polish of age. It originally came from Providence, R.I., and belonged to a friend's grandfather. Two of the bedroom walls are painted aqua, the other two papered in a dainty print.

Occupying a prominent place in the Coburns' living room, the hand carved coffee table is inlaid with the lead plates from a chapter of one of the author's books, "Sky Pilot Cowboy." Another prized possession in this charmingly rustic room is the bronze yearling on the mantel given to him by the late Tex Wheeler. The Harry Shriner painting above the fireplace shows part of the desert around Gila Bend.
