Symphonic Winds Conductor LΓ‘szlΓ³ Veres will perform β€œOne Hand, One Heart” from β€œWest Side Story” with granddaughter Karylin Veres.

It’s not uncommon to see a second β€œVeres” on the program of an Arizona Symphonic Winds concert, but on Sunday, March 18, Conductor LΓ‘szlΓ³ Veres is stretching the familial boundaries into the next generation.

Veres, a clarinetist from way back, will join his granddaughter Karylin Veres for a duet of Leonard Bernstein’s β€œOne Hand, One Heart” from β€œWest Side Story.” His granddaughter recently graduated from Arizona State University with a musical theater degree and spent two seasons performing leading roles in β€œMy Fair Lady” and β€œWest Side Story” with Scottsdale Musical Theater.

β€œGrandfather joins granddaughter β€” that has never happened before in a Winds’ concert,” Veres said.

In addition to celebrating Bernstein as part of the 100th anniversary of his birth, Sunday’s spring concert also celebrates Veres’ Hungarian roots. The program includes a Hungarian march and dances and a piece by KodΓ‘ly that Veres said just might be the most challenging work his volunteer ensemble has attempted in its 33-year history.
