The Middle March Fire is burning in the southern edge of the Dragoon Mountains in Coronado National Forest northeast of Tombstone.
The Tombstone Fire Department said the fire grew to about 2,300 acres but threatened no structures.
The fire was reported at 5:58 pm Sunday, according to Coronado National Forest.
Stephanie Stewart and several other people in the area tried to slow the fire's spread.
"We had one fire extinguisher and a shovel and resorted to doing what we could to stomp on the fires and kick them out," Stewart wrote. "It was uncontrollable after half an hour even though we all tried to contain and defeat the small fires, but the wind took the flames over the ridge and we watched the airplanes coming in after that."
As of Monday morning, fire activity was deemed "very minimal."
Fire investigators are on the scene, according to Coronado National Forest, though the cause has not been established.
