Visitors walk along the Desert Loop Trail at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. The popular attraction west of Tucson reopened Thursday, a day after it closed after a staff member was bitten by a possible rabid fox on the grounds.

The Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum reopened Thursday morning after closing for the day Wednesday when a staff member was bitten by a potentially rabid wild fox.

The unidentified staff member had previously been vaccinated against rabies and did not require additional treatment for the fox bite, despite it being suspected as rabid, Arizona Game and Fish Department spokesman Mark Hart, told the Star on Wednesday.

The incident happened at about 8 a.m., shortly before the popular attraction west of Tucson was scheduled to open for the day.

A staff member who encountered two foxes fighting on the grounds of the museum was bitten while trying intervene, officials say. The bite did not penetrate the skin.

The Desert Museum remained closed Wednesday while trained staff searched for the two foxes.

The two animals were eventually captured, examined by a veterinarian and they were euthanized. Their remains were submitted for rabies testing.
