A 41-year-old Sierra Vista man was arrested in a stolen truck Saturday, after following a sheriff's deputy and asking for his identification, officials said.
Cameron Smith was booked into the Cochise County jail on charges of motor vehicle theft, false reporting to a police officer and theft, said Carol Capas, a Cochise County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman.
At about 10 p.m., a sheriff's deputy was driving south on State Route 92, south of Sierra Vista, when he noticed a vehicle that appeared to be following him, Capas said.
The deputy made multiple turns to confirm that he was being followed before pulling over to allow the truck to pass him, Capas said.
The truck pulled up beside the patrol vehicle and the man asked the deputy for identification. The deputy asked why the driver was following him, but the man only said that he wanted to know the deputy's identity, Capas said.
The deputy ran a records check on the man and vehicle, and learned that the truck had been reported stolen from Sierra Vista two days prior, Capas said.
