STK emergency

A 44-year-old bicyclist who ignored a traffic signal was struck and killed Saturday on the city's south side, Tucson police say.

About 5 p.m., Troy Michael Helmick was riding south near the curb of South Sixth Avenue when he failed to stop at a red light. He was struck by a westbound Hyundai Accent on the Interstate 10 frontage road, police said in a news release.

Helmick died later at a hospital.

The unidentified Hyundai driver remained at the crash scene and was cooperative, police said.

The crash still is being investigated, but police say Helmick’s failure to stop at the red light was the major contributing factor of the collision.
