Karate student Kelly Sweeney, second from right in back row, stands with staff members of the Kodenkan Yudanshakai Dojo and the Ott Family YMCA.

What: Ben’s Bells promote kindness and community involvement. Each week a person who makes Tucson better is “belled.”

Last week’s recipient: Ott Family YMCA staff and Kodenkan Yudanshakai Dojo.

Nominated by: Cathy Sweeney-Daniel.

Why: For their acceptance and openness to helping Sweeney-Daniel’s daughter in her karate class. Kelly Sweeney has Down syndrome and has been taking karate classes at the YMCA.

Sweeney-Daniel said the instructors have been “amazing” with her daughter. “You stepped up to the challenge with grace and a willingness to learn,” she wrote in her nomination letter. Sweeney-Daniel said her daughter has become more confident and sure of herself since taking the class. The instructors have gone out of their way to include Sweeney and show her that she can learn karate, her mother wrote. “I am thankful for all of you,” she wrote.
