What: Ben’s Bells promote kindness and community involvement. Each week a person who makes Tucson better is “belled.”

Last week’s recipient: Barbara Macpherson.

Nominated by: Annie Schlesinger.

Why: For serving on the board of the National Federation of the Blind and for helping found the Tucson Society of the Blind, a group that provides education, entertainment and socialization for the blind and visually impaired. Macpherson also provides training for Sun Van drivers on how to assist and interact with visually impaired riders. “Barbara is an example of the philosophy of living life as we want and does not let blindness hold her back,” Schlesinger wrote in her nomination letter. “She uses her personal experiences with vision loss and training to reach out and assist others in working toward independent living. She is making a difference in people’s lives.”
