What: Ben’s Bells promote kindness and community involvement. Each week a person who makes Tucson better is “belled.”
Last week’s recipient: Humberto S. Lopez.
Nominated by: Tucson City Councilman Richard Fimbres.
Why: For his support of the Tucson Homeless Work Program and the Sister Jose’s Women’s Center. Lopez and his wife, Czarina, have made several large donations to support people experiencing homelessness. The two main gifts have been for the women’s center and the work program, Fimbres wrote in his nomination letter. The donation to Sister Jose’s allowed for a full-scale commercial kitchen in its new facility on South Park Avenue. This addition will allow for meal production and kitchen-skills training and certification. The work program is an outreach program to help people experiencing homelessness through employment. The city and Pima County started a pilot program in December 2016. Lopez provided a matching $50,000 donation, which will allow for the pilot to be more expansive and inclusive for those experiencing homelessness, Fimbres wrote. The work program operates three days a week. “Humberto’s generosity has greatly helped the Tucson community,” Fimbres wrote.
