A variety of mirrors are on display as preparations are made for the second annual Wildcat Welcome Rummage Sale. The event, at 3740 E. 34th St., is scheduled for Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Looking for a good bargain on a working microwave oven or mini-fridge as you get ready for school? How about some bedding, storage containers or a coffee maker, which could come in handy down the stretch at the end of the semester?

The University of Arizona’s second annual Wildcat Welcome Rummage Sale on Saturday, July 29, may be just the ticket.

The event, which is open to the public, is part of the UA’s Dodge the Dumpster project, in which students donated their unwanted items instead of throwing them away last May, said Julia Rudnick with the UA Office of Sustainability.

Donations were left in the lobbies of several student residences by as many as 4,900 students.

The project diverted more than 85,850 pounds of usable items, recyclables and food from going into the landfill, she said.

The salvaged items such as mirrors, lamps, fans, toasters and vacuum cleaners represent 66,000 pounds that will be resold at the sale, Rudnick said.

Some items that were collected were donated to charitable organizations.

Checks are the preferred means of payment but credit cards will be accepted on Saturday, Rudnick said. The UA will not accept cash, she said.
