lights and sirens

A 25-year-old bicyclist was killed in a crash on the northwest side Monday. He was identified as Nicholas Rizzuti, according to a Tucson Police Department Facebook post.

Shortly after 11 a.m., police and paramedics responded to a report of a crash at West Miracle Mile and North Flowing Wells Road. Paramedics transported the bicyclist to Banner-University Medical Center Tucson where he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival, said police.

Traffic detectives learned that a driver of a white 1994 Dodge truck was traveling west on Miracle Mile approaching a green light at Flowing Wells.

The bicyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, was traveling east on Miracle Mile and made a left turn to head north on Flowing Wells when he was struck by the truck going through the intersection, police said. The driver of the truck was not injured.

Investigators said speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

Since January, there have been four traffic fatalities in the city, compared to six at this time last year, according to police data.
