A man claiming responsibility for the Feb. 1 hit-and-run death of a 21-year-old skateboarder turned himself into authorities Monday.
31-year-old David Martinez-Campa has been booked into the Pima County jail and charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving serious injury or death, a felony, said Deputy Cody Gress, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman.
Martinez-Campa told deputies he had information about the hit-and-run that killed Michael Hartman, saying that his car had been involved in the crash. After detectives spoke with Martinez-Campa, they decided he was the driver at the time of the crash and fled the scene, Gress said.
Hartman was critically injured after he was hit by a car in the area of South Swan Road and East Valencia Road.
Traffic detectives went to the scene at 2 p.m. for reports of a man down, and learned that the suspect car was traveling northbound on Swan Road when it crashed into Hartman, who was riding his skateboard, Gress said.
Witnesses told detectives that the car didn't slow down or stop, and continued to drive northbound.
Deputies are still asking for witnesses to come forward, as they could provide information that may still be helpful for the investigation.
