William Cornett, 25, and Victoria Cornett, 23, were arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct in recklessly handling or displaying a weapon, after police say they displayed a rifle near a March For Our Lives rally in Sahuarita.

A husband and wife were arrested Saturday by Sahuarita police officers in connection to reports of a rifle "sticking out" a truck as it passed twice by demonstrators at a March For Our Lives rally.

William Cornett, 25, and Victoria Cornett, 23, were arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct in recklessly handling or displaying a weapon, said Lt. Sam Almodova of the Sahuarita Police Department Tuesday.

The Cornetts were booked into the Pima County jail, but have since been released, a jail official said.

Shortly after 11 a.m. on the day of the rally, witnesses reported to police that a truck drove by demonstrators and a "rifle was sticking out of the truck on the driver's side," and when the truck passed by a second time the rifle was sticking out on the passenger's side, Almodova said.

Witnesses, who said the truck had a confederate flag, provided police with a partial license plate and a description of the truck. The information and an officer, who was familiar with the vehicle, led investigators to the Cornetts, said Almodova.

During questioning, the Cornetts told police that the gun was not loaded at the time of the incidents.

Almodova said investigators have "no way of knowing if it was or was not loaded" at the time of the rally.

Whether the gun was loaded or not loaded, the action was "still dangerous," said Almodova, adding that "a responsible gun owner" would not have behaved "in a reckless manner."
