The Tucson Police Department identified the suspect in an officer-involved shooting on Wednesday and linked him to seven additional robberies over the past two months.
TPD tracked the suspect, identified as 41-year-old Cisco Castillo, to theΒ Campbell Terrace Apartments at 4750 S. Campbell Avenue, while investigating an armed robbery that occurred after midnight at a Viva Burrito on East Irvington Road, a department news release said.
When officers closed in on Castillo, he was on a second-story balcony inside the complex and βappeared to be brandishing a handgun," said Sgt. Pete Dugan, a police spokesman. This prompted four police officers to open fire on the suspect.
Castillo, after being hit by gunfire, forced entry into an occupied apartment by breaking through a front window.
A Tucson mother and her 3-year-old child saved themselves by hiding in a locked bedroom and calling 911 when the suspect broke into their apartment, Dugan said.
Police were able to advise her of their rescue plan over the phone while hostage negotiators continued speaking with Castillo.
SWAT officers immediately made the decision to rescue theΒ mother and her child by using a ladder to sneak them out through a second-story window.
Shortly after, negotiators were able to get Castillo to walk out of the apartment and he was taken into custody without further incident.
Castillo was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, where he remains as of Wednesday afternoon. Castillo's expected to face "numerous" felony charges upon his release, the news release said.
Detectives gathered evidence from both scenes, including a black replica handgun Castillo is suspected of brandishing.
An additional investigation is being conducted by the department's Office of Professional Standards for the actions taken by personnel. It is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings.
The department identified the four officers who discharged their guns as: 19-year-veteran Anthony Gutierrez, 17-year-veteran Juan Caquias, 10-year-veteran Alex QuirozΒ and 3-year-veteran Arturo Hernandez.
