Pima County is warning about a phone scam in which callers posing as government employees are telling people they owe fines for a bill, permit or fee.

The calls, which appear to come from legitimate county phone numbers, are actually made using a caller ID “spoofer” in an attempt to build legitimacy. People are asked for personal information, including credit card numbers.

“If you’re ever uncertain if the person you’re speaking to works for the county, ask their name and the department they work for and tell them you’ll call them back and hang up,” the alert suggested.

County officials said to visit www.pima.gov or call 520-724-9999 and ask if the person you were speaking to is a county employee, and calling for a legitimate purpose. Any attempted fraud should be reported to the Arizona Attorney General’s Consumer Fraud Department.
