Magee Middle School wins $5,000 grant from D-backs

Magee Middle School has been awarded a $5,000 grant by the Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation.

The money will be used to support the HeartMath project, a technology program that helps improve learning performance and emotional health.

Students will be able to see how emotions and attitudes affect their heart rhythm patterns in real time and when they are in a state of coherence.

Initially, the program will be used for students receiving counseling and speech services. The program will expand to include students referred for behavioral issues.

Magee is one of 22 winning schools in the D-backs’ $100,000 School Challenge and the only Tucson school selected.

Acclaim for International School’s Chinese program

The International School of Tucson has been named the Hanban Confucius Classroom of the Year.

Hanban is a nonprofit organization that works to promote Chinese language and culture, and supports local Chinese teaching internationally. The award is based on the quality of teaching and learning, curriculum, cultural richness and community outreach and involvement, as well as extracurricular activities.

Head of School William Arthur will travel to Shanghai this week for the 10th Global Confucius Institute Conference, where he will receive the award.

Learn about CDO High at Wednesday open house

Canyon del Oro High School is hosting an information session for prospective students and families on Wednesday.

Information will be available on academic programming, as well as athletics and open enrollment.

The event is from 6 to 7:15 p.m. at the Oro Valley campus, 25 W. Calle Concordia.

ASDB shows growth in student achievement

Achievement at the Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and the Blind is on the rise, according to results from a national assessment.

The campuses, including the Tucson location, showed a significant increase — 25 to 50 percent — in the number of students who met or exceeded their individual academic growth targets on the Measures of Academic Progress, the schools said.

MAP is a computer-adaptive assessment that measures individual student progress and achievement in reading, language usage and mathematics.

Sixth Weihnachtsmarkt
is at Desert Sky school

Desert Sky Community School is holding its sixth annual German-style winter market on Saturday. At the Weihnachtsmarkt, families will have the opportunity to sample German food, treats and holiday drinks.

There will also be horse-drawn carriage rides, vendors, music, activities for children and more.

The Dec. 5 event will be held at the midtown school, 1350 N. Arcadia, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Admission is free.

Desert 35 Roadrunner kids to get Elks shopping spree

Thirty-five students from Roadrunner Elementary School will be treated to a shopping spree and a luncheon on Dec. 5.

The Catalina Mountain Elks Lodge #2815 is taking the students to the JCPenney at El Con mall and giving $140 to each child to buy new clothes and shoes.

The shopping spree will be followed by a holiday luncheon at the lodge, 10645 N. Oracle Road. The students also will receive toys and school supplies.

Students at Mountain View, Marana offer free portraits

Students from Marana and Mountain View high schools will provide free printed photo portraits to families on Saturday, Dec. 5.

The event will be at the Desert Son Community Church, 5250 W. Cortaro Farms Road from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
