Pima Countyβs school superintendent has appointed a former Arizona House of Representatives member to fill an empty seat on the Pima Community College Board of Governors.
Linda Arzoumanian selected Demion Clinco to takeover PCCβs District 2 representative spot after it was vacated by former member David Longoria, who left Tucson for a job in Phoenix in October.
Longoria was elected to a six-year term in 2010. By state law, Arzoumanian had to temporarily fill the position until the seat is up for election again in 2016.
Clinco was one of four people considered for the position. The other candidates include retired Tucson Unified School District elementary school principal Georgia Brousseau, former TUSD board member Miguel Cuevas and Desert View High School teacher Rene Teyechea.
Clinco, who is the president and executive director of the Tucson Historic Preservation Foundation, was appointed as a state representative for Legislative District 2 in January 2014. Clinco, a Democrat, lost to Republican John C. Ackerley in the 2014 election.
According to a PCC news release on Sunday, the advisory committee assigned to the board search was impressed with Clincoβs knowledge of PCCβs financial background and his wish to continue developing transparency about the college with the community. The members also noted during the interviewing process that Clinco expressed a goal of moving PCC away from being an βon noticeβ college from the Higher Learning Commission.
Clinco will take his seat on the board after taking the oath of office. He will serve until the end of 2016.
