Jeanmarie Schiller-McGinnis, with bell at left, is the founder of Hearts that Purr Feline Guardians.

What: Ben’s Bells promote kindness and community involvement. Each week a person who makes Tucson better is “belled.”

Last week’s recipient: Jeanmarie Schiller-McGinnis.

Nominated by: Kenneth Cohn.

Why: For her work with an organization that finds homes for cats whose owners have died or can no longer provide a home for them. She is the founder of Hearts that Purr Feline Guardians, a nonprofit. Typically, Schiller-McGinnis gets notified about the death of a senior citizen who had a pet cat. She will go to a shelter, retrieve the cat and find a new home for it. The group also provide medical care for the cats, many of whom are old and in need of medical assistance or medication. She also looks for others to help foster the cats while a home is being sought.
