A toddler nearly drowned Sunday after he climbed through a damaged fence around a pool.ย

The 18-month-old boy was under water in a pool on the 5600 block of East Fourth Street for about one minute, according to the Tucson Fire Department. The toddler's father performed CPR with guidance from TFD dispatchers. The toddler was crying when TFD personnel arrived on the scene.ย

The family arrived home around 5:40 p.m. and was unloading their vehicle when they noticed the toddler was missing, TFD said in a news release Monday. They found him in the pool and immediately pulled him out.ย

The toddler's condition is unknown, TFD said.ย

Sunday's incident was the third near-drowning this year caused by a barrier not in proper working order, TFD said.ย

Pool fences should be at least 48 inches tall, with a self-closing, self-latching, child resistant gate, TFD said. Never leave a child unattended near water. Parents should learn CPR.ย
