Tucson Fire paramedics responded to a near drowning of a baby girl in midtown Tuesday.

The condition of the infant is not immediately known, said Capt. Andy Skaggs of the Tucson Fire Department.

A fire crew was dispatched at about 4:30 p.m. to the 5000 block of East 35th Street, said Skaggs.

The neighborhood is east of South Craycroft and north of East Golf Links roads.

A person met paramedics in the front yard of the residence with the baby. Paramedics loaded the child into the ambulance and took her to the hospital.

It was not immediately known how the child was exposed to water, or for how long, Skaggs said.

No further information was released about the case.

This is the second near drowning in the city in less than one month, said Skaggs.

He said drowning is the leading cause of injury-related deaths among children between ages 1 and 4. It is the third leading cause of injury-related deaths among children 19 and under.

Skaggs said a child should never be left unattended around water. Babies can drown in as little as one inch of water. He also advised that parents should learn CPR.
