Anthony Woznick, a student at Desert View High School, has been nominated along with four other Arizona students as a state finalist for the U.S. Presidential Scholars in Career and Technical Education award. Woznick will be recognized at a ceremony on Tuesday, Dec. 12.
Students were selected by a review team consisting of six CTE stakeholders based on evidence of academic rigor, technical competence, employability skills, and ingenuity and creativity.
The five nominations were submitted by the Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction’s Office to the Commission on Presidential Scholars at the U.S. Department of Education. Woznick was the only student from Southern Arizona nominated for the award.
The U.S. Presidential Scholars in Career and Technical Education program honors students on the basis of outstanding scholarship and demonstrated ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields.
Three Tucson schools getting D-backs grants
Three Tucson schools have been selected to receive grants as part of the D-backs $100,000 School Challenge.
The awards, presented by the University of Phoenix, will fund projects ranging in need from school improvement to innovative programming.
Locally, Envision High School will receive grant funds for a culinary-arts program; Lulu Walker Elementary School will receive funding for a nutrition/fitness project; and Ochoa Community School will receive a grant to support an ecology project.
Each of the schools will also be honored at a 2018 Arizona Diamondbacks game next spring at Chase Field, with the D-backs donating tickets for students, parents, teachers and staff.
Marana district seeks input on textbook
The Marana Unified School District is considering adopting a new textbook for its Advanced Placement comparative government and politics course at Mountain View High School.
The text, AP* Comparative Government and Politics: An Essential Coursebook (seventh edition), is available for public review Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Jan. 8 at the Marana Unified School District Office, 11290 W. Grier Road., Suite 121C.
