A 62-year old man and his dog are being assisted by the Red Cross, after their north side mobile home fire was completely destroyed in a Thursday night blaze.

At about 11:45, Tucson fire crews responded to reports of heavy smoke and flames coming from a mobile home in the 4300 block of North Wegner Lane, near West Auto Mall Drive and West Wetmore Road, said Barret Baker, a Tucson Fire Department spokesman.

The house was fully involved in flames when crews arrived, but the resident was already safely outside the home. It took nine units consisting of 23 firefighters just under 30 minutes to bring the fire under control, Baker said.

The resident told investigators that he woke up, saw the wall on fire and attempted to smother the flames. When that didn't work, he used a fire extinguisher, until he realized the fire was growing too quickly and left the home.

The cause and origin of the blaze are under investigation, but the home is considered a total loss, Baker said.
