The Department of Homeland Security has announced that it will increase its β€œexit bonus” for undocumented immigrants who self-deport by the end of 2025. The department raised the incentive from $1,000 to $3,000 and will provide free airfare to qualified participants who depart by December 31. It also noted that undocumented migrants may have certain civil fines or penalties for remaining illegally in the US waived if they use the CBP Home app to self-deport. Under the Trump administration’s policy, migrants are instructed to use the platform to signal their intent to depart. If deemed eligible, individuals will receive compensation after the US government confirms they have left the country. β€œIllegal aliens should take advantage of this gift and self-deport because if they don’t, we will find them, we will arrest them, and they will never return,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated. The app was originally developed during the Biden administration to help migrants schedule asylum interviews. Under the Trump administration, however, its function has shifted significantly. US officials describe the program as a cost-effective alternative to arrests and deportations, which the government estimates cost an average of $17,000 per migrant.
