Now that most local school districts have announced that we're going back to school Friday, May 4, a big question lingers: Are we going to have to make up school that was missed?
The answer varies from district to district, but most are making every effort to keep the school year the same length.
Here's what we know so far.
Tucson Unified School District: TUSD posted on Facebook Thursday that so far there is no need to extend the school year. Bell schedules may be adapted to meet instructional time requirements. Graduation plans won't change. The last day of school is May 24.
Sunnyside Unified School District: As of Thursday, Sunnyside didn't anticipate extending the school year. The last day of school is May 24. Graduations and middle school promotions will happen as planned.
Marana Unified School District: The district said Thursday that it has enough instructional hours and will not have to extend the school year beyond the last day, May 24. Graduation, AP exams and finals will proceed as scheduled.
Vail School District: Graduations and exams won't be impacted. The district said Wednesday it was still determining whether days need to be added. Vail's last day was scheduled to be May 25 before the walkouts.
Tanque Verde Unified School District: The district is making up time by adding two days to the school calendar and minutes to the schedule. Early release Wednesdays will become full school days. Tanque Verde's last day was supposed to be May 23, but if the school board approves it, the district will add May 24 and May 25 as half days. Student attendance won't be mandatory for these extra days, and they won't affect grades. AP exams and graduations aren't affected. Go here for more information.
Catalina Foothills School District: The school year won't extend beyond the planned last day of school May 23, the district said Thursday. Graduations, exams and other end-of-the-year activities proceed as planned.
Sahuarita Unified School District: Because the district returned to school on Wednesday, it should not need to make up days, it said in a notice on Monday.
Amphitheater Public Schools: The district said Friday that it will not have to add days to the school year. The last day of school will still be on May 24. To make up time, the school is getting rid of early release on Tuesdays for the rest of the year. Graduations and other end-of-the-year activities proceed as planned. Go here for more information.
Flowing Wells Unified School District: On Wednesday, Superintendent David Baker said in a letter to parents that the district was working "diligently to offer all of the scheduled end-of-year activities and programs" and "evaluating the impact of closures on the remaining calendar."
