Teacher rally girl

Hundreds of teachers, supporters and families gathered on all four corners of Granada and Congress Street in downtown Tucson Thursday morning to show support for the #RedforEd movement which seeks to restore funding to Arizona's public education system.Β

All of Tucson-area public school districts will be closed on Monday.

Based on reported teacher absences for Monday, Tucson Unified School District has made the announcement that schools will be closed on Monday. Food services will continue to be offered for free to children under the age of 18.

The Flowing Wells School District will also be closed Monday. Food services will continue to be available to students and families.Β

Marana Unified was the first district to announce its closure. It's parent letter said in the event that schools will be closed on Tuesday, May 1, Marana Unified will inform parents no later than 3 p.m. Monday, April 30.

Catalina Foothills School District was the second to announce it will remain closed on Monday.Β

A letter to parents read: We will continue to monitor the situation closely. If there is news of a resolution later today or over this weekend, we will send a notification that our schools will reopen. You will be notified by email and social media.

Amphitheater Public Schools will also be closed Monday. The district announcement reads:

Yesterday, the Arizona State Legislature adjourned without a budget and will not resume its session until Monday, April 30th. I would have hoped, with so many parents, teachers and students coming to the Capitol to express their concern, that our legislature would have at least shown the courtesy of listening to them.

Now, however, it appears the #RedForEd participants will continue their demonstration into Monday, when the legislators are back in session, and when they hope to be heard.

Therefore, Amphitheater again has so many employees who have reported their absence for Monday, that ALL schools in the Amphitheater district must remain closed on April 30.

Sunnyside Unified School District has also cancelled classes on Monday, due to the "extended teacher walkout." The district notice said it hopes to resume classes Tuesday. Updates will be communicated by 3:30 p.m. Monday. Food services will be available to students and their families.Β

Tanque Verde School District will be closed Monday.Β

Sahuarita School District will be closed Monday.Β

The Vail Unified School District announced its closure Saturday morning.Β

We will update this with other district information as we receive it.Β
