Arizona freshman forward Lauri Markkanen announced this morning he'll leave for the NBA Draft, ending his decorated college career after one season with the Wildcats as expected.
Markkanen, a third-team Associated Press All-American who averaged 15.6 points and 7.2 rebounds, thanked UA fans while appearing with coach Sean Miller and his father, Pekka,Β at a news conference today in McKale Center.
"I think it's the right decision," Miller said. "I think he's going to be an incredibly high pick in this draft. And that's based on feedback (from NBA officials)."
Markkanen is projected to be taken with the No. 8 pick in the June draft by Draft Express.
"I think I'm ready to go and do my best," Markkanen said.
UA still faces three other decisions on early departures: Guard Kobi Simmons is expected to leave for pro ball, while wings Rawle Alkins and Allonzo Trier appear to be evaluating whether to leave irrevocably or test the draft.
"We're gonna deal with these guys individually because each has a different situation," Miller said, noting that Markkanen will be leaving soon to return to Finland to rest and prepare for the NBA Draft.
Both Markkanen and Miller described the moment as bittersweet. Markkanen said he's been "blessed to be here," and Miller expressed similar emotion.
"His greatest strength is he focuses on the team and he's trying to win," Miller said. His play speaks for itself. It's bittersweet today. Anytime you see somebody recognize his dreams and you see the bright, bright future. Heβs given us a lot and hopefully we've given him something he can always remember."
The Star's Zack Rosenblatt will have more on this story later today.
