Six things to know about Arizona's interim AD, Erika Hanson Barnes

Erika Hanson Barnes was named the Wildcats’ interim AD on Monday.

Barnes (then Erika Hanson) played first base at the UA from 1998-2001, winning a Women’s College World Series championship as a senior. Barnes played professionally for the New York/New Jersey Juggernaut of National Pro Fastpitch, working for the team’s marketing department during the offseasons. Barnes has been involved with the Wildcats’ softball program in one way or another since her return to the UA in 2005. For a time, Barnes served as the color analyst on Arizona’s radio broadcasts.

Barnes was an NFCA Scholar-Athlete All-American while in college, and holds two degrees from Arizona: A 2001 bachelor’s degree in communications and a 2010 M.B.A. from the Eller College of Management. Barnes also serves on the Pac-12 board alongside UA president Ann Weaver Hart.

Barnes worked in the UA’s marketing department before moving into fundraising. She was promoted to senior associate athletic director for administration and major gifts in 2011, a position she held for two years.

Kathleen “Rocky” LaRose’s retirement in 2013 led to Barnes’s promotion to senior associate athletic director and senior woman administrator. In her role, she oversees the internal operations of all 20 sports and support programs, including the C.A.T.S. student-athlete services. LaRose was a pioneer in women’s athletic administration who, like Barnes, began as a UA softball player. LaRose served as the UA’s last interim athletic director, in 2010.

From 2010-14, Barnes shared a name — but not a spelling — with a UA women’s basketball player. Erica (with a c) starred on the court, while Erika (with a k) worked behind the scenes in McKale Center.

Barnes is married to former UA golfer Andy Barnes; together, they have two young children: Daughter Tillie is 3, and son Blake turned 1 on Friday. Andy Barnes is the brother of PGA Tour pro Ricky Barnes, one of the most accomplished golfers in Arizona history.
