The series: Jared Brownridge scored a Wooden Legacy tournament record 44 points while Santa Clara took UA to overtime last season before the Wildcats pulled out a 75-73 win, in a game when center Kaleb Tarczewski was lost to an ankle injury in the first half. The Wildcats also beat Santa Clara 82-59 in the Las Vegas Invitational during the 2010-11 season and lead the series 7-4 overall.Β

Known for changing his style to suit his roster nearly every season at ASU, Herb Sendek is doing it all over again this season with an entirely different program. His Broncos like to run and shoot, with at least four capable three-point shooters on the floor at all times. Santa Clara has taken 51 percent of its shots from behind the three-point arc so far this season, with Brownridge able to either drive or shoot it with ease. Forward Jarvis Pugh rebounded from a knee injury that kept him out most of last season to become the teamβs most accurate three-point shooter while point guard Matt Hauser is also a capable long-range shooter. Swedish big man Henrik Jadersten hits 38.1 percent of his threes, too.Β

Heβs baaaack. Brownridge dropped 44 points on the UA last season, and appears to be at it again this year. Monday, he hit seven 3-pointers and totaled 32 points against Sacred Heart.Β

Arizona has been grooming Allen for its defensive stopper role, and the Wildcats may know Thursday if heβs ready. Back from a knee sprain, Allen will need to slow down Brownridge and the Broncosβ perimeter shooting.Β

βCoach Sendek is truly holding to form. Heβs transformed their offense. Heβs got a lot of quick hitters, a lot of plays in transition and heβs really given Brownridge more freedom. (Brownridge) still gets to the line a lot but he has more freedom to get plays for his shots and heβs very fast. Pugh is tremendous; I would assume heβs been a pleasant surprise for Coach Sendek. All their guys can shoot 3s on the perimeter. Theyβre a skilled team. β¦ (Defensively) I would be surprised if they donβt go zone. They showed it a couple of times. Iβm looking for matchup zone, junk defense. Everything is possible.β β UA assistant coach Book Richardson, who scouted the Broncos.Β

When Brownridge went off for 44 against the Wildcats last season, it wasnβt a fluke.
Not for Brownridge, who averaged 20.6 points and made the all-WCC team last season, and not for UA coach Sean Miller.
Brownridgeβs performance exposed defensive slippage on a team that had been among the nationβs best during the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons.
βIt was an easy 44 or 45,β Miller said. βHe was closer to 60 than 20. He missed some good shots and that says a lot about last yearβs team for us. Everybody saw that defensive stopper role and they just ran as fast as they could the other direction. β¦ Although we might have improved somewhat, (tough defense) never became part of last yearβs identity.βΒ

Among the schedule Sendek inherited was to be the traditional host of the 50th annual Cable Car Classic, an opening weekend whirlwind that put the Broncos in three games over the first three days of the season.
They beat NAU in the opener but then lost to UC Davis and Tennessee State during the event.
Overall, the Broncos have played five games over the first 11 games of the season, and now will play two more in Las Vegas over days 14 and 15.
βIt seems like weβre playing a disproportionate number of games early right off the bat here,β Sendek said. βIt feels like weβre an NBA team. Three games in a row is probably not the best way to start the season.βΒ

One reason Sendekβs move to Santa Clara may be a good fit: He graduated from well-regarded Carnegie Mellon with a 3.95 grade-point average, while heβs now working at a school that U.S. News and World Report ranks second in Western regional universities, behind only Trinity (Texas) and ahead of West Coast Conference rivals such as Loyola Marymount, Gonzaga, Portland and St. Maryβs.
Of course, that also means Sendek has to recruit from a pool of players who can get past the admissions office.
βIt is a really top notch academic institution,β Sendek said. βI think that plays into recruiting.βΒ
