Top-ranked Washington scored on Arizona’s Taylor McQuillin with two outs in the seventh inning, then walked off with a 2-1 victory in extra frames over the ninth-ranked Wildcats on Friday in Seattle.
The game was a true’s pitchers’ duel, with McQuillin and Washington’s Taran Alvelo combining to strike out 22 batters and allow just five total hits.
Arizona’s first hit, a solo home run by Alyssa Palomino in the sixth inning, gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead over the nation’s No. 1 team. McQuillin and the Wildcats breezed through the bottom half of the inning, and the Wildcats led the Huskies 1-0 heading into the seventh.
McQuillin hit Kelly Burdick with a pitch to start the inning. Brudick advanced to second when McQuillin issued a two-out walk, and came around to score when Sis Bates ripped a two-out, game-tying single.
The Wildcats (24-4, 3-1) were held scoreless in the top of the eighth. Julia DePonte won the game for Washington with a walk-off, solo home run in the bottom half.
McQuillin felll to 16-2 on the season. Alvelo improved to 14-1.
Washington improved to 30-2 overall and 2-2 in Pac-12 play. The teams will play again Saturday at 3:30 p.m.; it will be televised on Pac-12 Arizona.
