ALGONAC, Mich. — A federal agent trapped in his car in the St. Clair River broke a window to escape and desperately held onto a pipe until he was rescued.
Details about the April incident are in records obtained Wednesday by the Port Huron Times Herald. The border agent's name wasn't revealed.
The agent was in Algonac before dawn. He believed his car was in reverse, not drive, when he hit the gas and suddenly drove into the St. Clair River.
The agent broke out and swam to a seawall but couldn't pull himself up. He says he gripped a pipe and repeatedly yelled for help.
He says he heard someone saying, "Hold on, don't give up!" His body temperature had dropped to 83 degrees, and he was treated for hypothermia.
