Tucson Symphony Orchestra maestro José Luis Gomez will lead the orchestra’s MasterWorks season finale this weekend, a program of early career works by Mozart and Dvorák, a world premiere of a TSO commission and an orchestra premiere of a Villa-Lobos gem.
“Youthful Exuberance from Mozart and Dvorák” includes Mozart’s beloved Symphony No. 25, written when he was just 17; Dvorák’s Serenade for Strings, penned when he was an early 30s newlywed; a TSO premiere of Villa-Lobos’s classical-folk fusion Prelude from Bachianas Brasileiras No. 4; and the world premiere of San Francisco composer Gabriella Smith’s “Rust,” which the orchestra commissioned as part of an effort to reach out to up-and-coming composers.
MasterWorks concerts are at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 3, at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 7650 N. Paseo Del Norte, in Oro Valley; and 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 4, and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 5, at Catalina Foothills High School, 4300 E. Sunrise Drive.
