Minnesota composer Stephen Paulus had pretty deep Tucson ties that went beyond his tenure as the Tucson Symphony Orchestra's composer in residence in the late 1990s.
He composed the moving Concerto in the American Style for the TSO and penned the 9/11 memorial piece "Prayers and Remembrances" for the Tucson Chamber Artists.
When he died on Oct. 19 — four months after suffering a devastating stroke in July — Tucson's music community felt as if it had lost one of its own.
This weekend, the TSO will remember Paulus during its "Brahms and Prokofiev" concerts by playing the second movement "With Quiet Intensity" of the Concerto in the American Style, a work the TSO commissioned and premiered in 1998. Concerts are at 8 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Sunday at Tucson Music Hall; click here for details and tickets.
