- BRAKEmax: In honor of Veterans Day, all Tucson-based BRAKEmax Car Care Centers will perform free oil changes for veterans who make an appointment for the holiday at any of their 14 Tucson-area locations.
Throughout the month of November, every BRAKEmax location will also be collecting donations for veterans. New or slightly used clothing, blankets and jackets, as well as brand-new socks and undergarments, will be accepted.
Customers who bring in these items will be rewarded with an oil change for $14.99 — a savings of $20. View a list of locations or schedule an appointment at brakemax.com/locations.
- Literacy Connects: With the support of local sponsors, donors, volunteers and student ambassadors, the Tucson community raised more than $135,000 for Literacy Connects at its annual Get Connected event on Oct. 19.
Sponsors that helped make the event possible include: Arizona Business Equipment, Focus HR, Pima Federal Credit Union, Long Realty Cares Foundation, Grand Canyon University, Vantage West Credit Union, AGM Container Controls INC, Nextrio and Thrivent Financial. The Fox Tucson Theatre, Mostly Books, the Tucson Roadrunners, the Tucson Museum of Art and Historic Block, and The Loft supported the event with raffle donations.
- Fishkind, Bakewell, Maltzman, Hunter & Associates Eye Care & Surgery Center: In recent weeks, the center performed three free cataract surgeries leading up to its participation in National Sight Week, sponsored by the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) Foundation. Fishkind, Bakewell, Maltzman, Hunter & Associates Eye Care & Surgery Center, with the assistance of the ASCRS Foundation, helped provide needed surgery to eligible patients in Tucson and Southern Arizona who were unable to access or afford it.
Southern Arizona Anesthesia Services also provided services and Bausch & Lomb provided intraocular lenses at no cost to patients.
- Southern Arizona Logistics Education Organization: SALEO announced seven winners of scholarships for the study of logistics, supply-chain management, transportation, inventory control, warehousing and other logistics-related subjects.
The Port of Tucson, which provides access to rail and intermodal container transportation and to warehousing, donated two scholarships and provided additional sponsorship for the tournament.
Pima County One Stop, which connects job seekers to a network of employment, training, and educational programs donated a scholarship. HDS, which provides truck-driver training, sponsored the awards luncheon. Scholarship winners Diana Marquez, Nubia D. Moreno, Luis R. Orozco and Bobby Padilla will study at Pima Community College; Paola I. Rocha and Mathew A. Raptis at the University of Arizona; and Gabriel Montero at Northern Arizona University.
