Insurance man Marquez will lead 2016-β17 United Way campaign
Edmund Marquez, owner of three Allstate Insurance agencies in Tucson, was named the United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona 2016-2017 campaign chair.
βUnited Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona is uniting a force against poverty and its annual campaign funds its work along with its more than 80 partner agencies. Eighty-nine cents of every dollar donated directly to United Way goes to fund programs,β the organization said in a news release.
Marquez, a University of Arizona graduate, serves on eight boards of directors, including the Rio Nuevo Multipurpose Facilities District, Sun Corridor Inc. and Southern Arizona YMCA. He is on the Southern Arizona Leadership Council and the DM50. He was named businessman of the year in 2004 by the Tucson Hispanic Chamber and father of the year in 2016 by the Tucson Fatherβs Day Council.
Banner-UMC hires surgeon Barth
Pediatric cardiac surgeon Dr. Mary-Jane Barth joined the medical staff of Banner-University Medical Center Tucson and the faculty of the University of Arizona Department of Surgery.
She comes from Childrenβs Hospital of Saint Francis in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she held faculty positions for University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State University pediatric residents.
Barth received her medical degree and completed her residency in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at University of Texas Southwestern. She was a pediatric cardiac surgeon for the Heart Institute for Children in Chicago. Her expertise is correcting congenital abnormalities of the heart.
Ronald McDonald House Charities of S. Arizona picks Jensen as CEO
Kate Maguire Jensen is the new president and CEO of the nonprofit Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Arizona, succeeding Diana Sheldon in the roles.
Jensen holds a University of Arizona masterβs degree in public health and has worked in marketing, communications and health care administration. She was director of business development at Carondelet St. Maryβs Hospital since 2013; and previously served as UA vice president for marketing and community affairs director at Steele Childrenβs Research Center for the UAβs College of Medicine.
Artist and βDaughtersβ author Celt
will be at the library this summer
Author and comic artist Adrienne Celt is the newest writer-in-residence at the Pima County Public Library. Her term will run from June 1 to Sept. 1, 2016.
Celtβs novel βThe Daughtersβ (W.W. Norton/Liveright 2015) won the PEN Southwest Book Award for Fiction and was named a Best Book of 2015 by NPR. She won a 2016 O. Henry Prize for βTemples,β published in Epoch. She writes and draws a comic at loveamongthelampreys.com
Celt will divide her hours: 10 a.m.-noon Tuesdays at Joel D. Valdez Main Library and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fridays at Himmel Park Library. She will also present events during the summer; for information, see library.pima.gov
Phan promoted to associate prof
in UAβs Department of Pharmacy
Hanna Phan was promoted to associate professor from assistant professor in the University of Arizona Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science.
She is also a clinical pharmacy specialist in pediatric pulmonary medicine at Banner-University Medical Center Tucson and a preceptor for residents.
Phan was recognized by the Arizona Pharmacists Association with the Exemplary Patient Care Award in 2012, the Spirit of the Pediatric Pharmacy Advocacy Group (PPAG) Award in 2012 and a Presidential Citation by PPAG in 2015. She is a previous chair of American College of Clinical Pharmacy Pediatric Practice and Research Network and a current director at large for PPAG.
