Convergys Corp. announced Wednesday that it plans to fill 500 positions in Tucson over the next three months.

The company will hold a job fair on Friday, July 22, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 3760 N. Commerce Drive, Suite 160.

Candidates may also apply online at www.convergys.com/careers .

“We are looking for highly motivated individuals to provide direct support to customers over the phone,” Geomara Armenta, site director for the Convergys’ contact center in Tucson, said in a news release.

Convergys says it offers on-site employees comprehensive training, competitive wages and benefits including medical and dental insurance, 401(k), tuition reimbursement, and paid and unpaid time off.

Convergys’ announcement came a day after another call-center operator, Afni Inc., said it will hire 300 customer service representatives in Tucson.

The back-to-back announcements are just the latest sign of the key role played by call centers in the local economy.

In 2015, call-center operator C3/Customer Contact Channels was Tucson’s fastest-growing employer, the 2016 Star 200 survey showed.

One reason is that Tucson offers a qualified workforce, Bob Tenzer, C3’s senior vice president of recruitment and human resources, said earlier this year. “We have found the quality of the labor in terms of work ethic, in terms of skill and in some cases, bilingual skill, to be very strong,” he said.

Five of the top 37 employers in this year’s Star 200 list of Southern Arizona’s largest employers are call-center operations.

It’s to the point that call-center companies in the area, including C3, Apac, Afni and Agero, have to compete for workers, Tenzer has said, although he added that staffing hasn’t been a problem.
